Trade secrets revealed in 4 main ways

On Behalf of | Mar 16, 2022 | Intellectual Property |

Trade secrets are very important to the future of your business, and you need to know how to protect them so that they don’t fall into the wrong hands. If the competition gets your trade secrets, that can dramatically hurt your plans for the future and may eliminate a lot of the value that your company holds.

Much of the time, business owners find that it is their employees who reveal these trade secrets. This can happen in four main ways.

The employee is careless

An employee may not understand how important the trade secrets are, or they may simply not be very careful with how they store information. They don’t think it’s a big deal until the theft occurs.

The employee accidentally reveals the secrets

In some cases, employees accidentally email the wrong person or reveal something to someone they thought was affiliated with your company when they really were not.

The employee is reluctant but still goes through with it

On occasion, employees are approached and do not want to reveal trade secrets, but they feel that they have to for some reason. For instance, an employee may be interviewing with another company and be asked about your trade secrets, and they may reveal them so that they don’t ruin their chances in the interview.

The employee does it on purpose

There are also cases in which employees do this on purpose. Perhaps a disgruntled employee wasn’t given a promotion or just lost their job. They may think that there will be no ramifications for revealing secrets to the competition.

No matter how it happens, you need to know exactly what options you have if your trade secrets have been compromised.
